Size
They vary in length between 57 and 76 cm. with a tail up to 72 cm long

Color
They have soft golden fur with a blue naked face

Habitat
Mostly in trees although they spend much time on the ground

Diet
They live in a harsh environment so they have to adapt to a varied diet, that consist of tree leaves, pine and fir needles, bamboo shoots, buds, fruits, lichens, tree bark, incests, worms, and small birds and   their eggs.


Breeding
Female golden monkey mature around 4 or 5 years old and produce one young after about 7- 8 months of gestation

Behavior
The groups they live in are very large and can get up to 600 golden monkeys, splitting into bands of 60 or 70 in the winter season. Males and females make different calls, while it is known members of the same group sing together.

Endangered
  • The Golden Monkeys fur has been a target for a long time. The fur is resistant to cold and they live in the second coldest habitat of all primates. People have been hunting them in order to capture the fur and make coats for humans that will be beautiful and warm.
  • Their population has been decreasing every year

Threats

  • The major threat for the species is forest loss due to agricultural expansion, especially outside of protected areas
  • There is also a serious threat from continued illegal hunting of these animal
  • There is also harassment owing to tourist activities, including the herding of troops for tourists to view

How many are left?
  • There are only around 20,000 Golden Monkeys that still remain on Earth
